She is focused on stories about Korean American culture and identity, and she is at work on a memoir. She recently completed an Open City fellowship in narrative nonfiction at the Asian American Writers&#8217; Workshop, and she was the president of Asian American Journalists Association&#8217;s New York chapter from 2017-2019. She is currently the content editor for Hapa Mag. She was an active member of AAJA from 2012-2019, holding positions on the national governing board and as the Asia chapter membership chair. Her work includes crowd-powered reporting in communities across the country, as well as running events, questionnaires and consulting with local newsrooms on how to best use engagement tools in their coverage areas. Prior to ProPublica, Beena was an education reporter at the Minneapolis Star Tribune, where she covered Minneapolis city schools and suburban education. She&#8217;s been involved with AAJA through her whole journalism career \u2014 she started as a member of the VOICES student project in 2015, served a stint as Minnesota chapter president and now serves as director of Yung AAJA, AAJA&#8217;s young professionals network.
