AAJA is currently planning a special service project day for all attendees as part of the\u00a0<\/span>2018 National Convention in Houston, TX<\/a><\/span>\u00a0as a way to give back to the local community. Stay tuned for more updates! In the meantime, convention co-chairs and Houston locals Michelle Choi and Pooja Lodhia name a few of the many community organizations making an impact in the Houston community to check out.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Houston Food Bank is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 and is a certified member of Feeding America, the nation\u2019s food bank network.\u00a0<\/span>The Houston Food Bank is America\u2019s largest food bank in distribution to its network of nearly 600 hunger relief charities in 18 southeast Texas counties. Named top charity in Texas by Charity Navigator for financial performance and accountability,\u00a0the Food Bank provides 74 million nutritious meals\u00a0to food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and other agencies, feeding 137,000 people each week.\u00a0<\/p>

The Chinese Community Center (CCC) started as a language school back in 1979\u00a0but is now a social service agency that helps more than 10,000 families every year.\u00a0The CCC focuses on immigrants, refugees, non-English speakers and low-income families.\u00a0\u00a0The CCC is a United Way of Greater Houston agency, a LISC Financial Opportunity Center, a HUD-approved Housing Counseling Agency and a NAEYC-accredited Child Development Center.<\/p>

India House was formed in 2008 by a group of Indian-American volunteers who wanted to serve the community by bringing free health and after-school programs to those in need.\u00a0India House provides classes in language, yoga and religion.\u00a0The charity group also works with county officials to offer free health and legal services for low-income families.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

The Asia Society was founded in 1956 by John D. Rockefeller III to promote greater understanding of Asia in the United States.\u00a0The charity offers educational experiences in the fields of arts, business, culture, education\u00a0and political science. The group\u2019s event center is just a few miles away from the convention hotel.\u00a0<\/p>

Daya offers counseling, legal services and housing services for women and children who are trying to escape domestic and sexual violence.\u00a0The charity serves more than 300 clients and fields more than 6,000 calls every year.\u00a0All services are free and confidential.\u00a0You can donate your money, time or services.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>
